When I was a little girl, & I mean, really small, like 4 or 5, we went to Disneyland for the first time. Two things stood out to me: the Haunted Mansion (why do they DO that to children?? It’s terrifying!) & Pirates of the Caribbean. Specifically, there was a part at the very beginning of the ride where the boats appear to be floating through a bayou at night. I was an Arizona kid, & had zero experience with wet places, so the whole magic quotient was sky high for me. The fake trees were bearded with Spanish moss & there were little lights flashing all over. I thought they were stars, but my parents said they were FIREFLIES. Bugs that glow…FASCINATING!

Flash forward 30+ years, and my family and I were arriving in Kansas, having just flown in from Germany. We were exhausted. The kids and I were sitting in the rental car, waiting for my husband to get the keys to our temporary military lodging, & it was taking FOREVER. But, it was twilight, & all of a sudden, I saw a little pinpoint of light outside. Then another. And another. There were fireflies everywhere! I got out of the car & was just chasing them around like I was that same little girl at Disneyland.

Here’s a roundup of scrapbook layouts & other crafty finds celebrating sultry summer nights…
