Art Journaling | August Inspiration

Hi and welcome to the first edition of art journaling inspiration! This is a new process and hopefully we will learn and share a lot together. Since this is a new venture, I thought I'd share some art journal inspiration with you.

There are tons of journalers all over the world, and each one does things a little differently. It is up to you to choose the style that fits and inspires you. Maybe it will be one of these styles...maybe not. I think art journaling, like scrapping, is an evolutionary process. You may start out heading in one style direction, but end up several months later in a completely different place. As long as you are expressing yourself and getting to be creative, that is all that matters!

If you are new to this process like I am, just take note of what you like about a certain page and/or what you don't like. Do you like how they built up their background or maybe they used font/type/handwriting in a really cool way. Maybe their colors were amazing or a certain element caught your eye. I think the easiest way to get started is to emulate things you like, and you will start to find your own style.

Here are a few examples of people with different styles and techniques.

I think Donna Downey is a good example of an art journaler who is sort of bridging the distance between scrapping and art journaling. Some of her pages use pictures, and some do not, but her pages are fairly straightforward and she doesn't throw a whole ton of images onto a page. This is a style that can be easily replicated in digi. She sort of creates a basic scrap page without a lot of fuss and distraction, using the space to her advantage. Then she is able to use word snips and have focus be on the simple journaling.





Next is Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. She focuses more on the journaling, and she has some great step-by-step examples of how she creates a page over the course of a few days (working ten minutes a day). This is an example of her completed page. She uses a lot of repeated shapes and fun ink splatter. This is another style that I could totally see in a digital version.



Here is one from the GSO archives from Soco. She created a digital page that is a lot of fun. She uses a lot of bright colors, different alphas, and collage.



This is a physical/paper page by Teesha Moore. Teesha is an amazing journaler who has been doing this for years and years. Her style has changed some over the years, and she is definitely doing pages that are more complicated and advanced than we would as beginners. But they are amazing examples of different things to try. She always uses an incredible amount of color and detail to her pages. Look at all of the shapes she uses. She also uses a lot of little dots and funky patterns.

I just love experimenting and playing with new techniques, products, papers, digital stuff. I've got some physical pages, some hybrid and some all digi but it's fun, gets your creativity going and I've loved journalling about the not-so-good stuff in my life like my divorce so it becomes very therapeutic in the end. Here's a couple of examples of what I've done over the past couple of years (the last two images are unfinished). I love what Teesha does and the details that she puts into her pages. And you must check out Sarah Barber's site as she is one amazing art journaller. So much emotion comes out through her art and I've been thoroughly inspired by her in my art journalling journey
