You can tell it’s spring this week in the galleries! Today’s eye candy is full of color and vibrance, and I love that. Onto the Gallery Greatness!
First up, Happy by Paula. Amazing. The circles and all the little details and painty bits are perfection!
Next is Sunshine by Tara. The yellow and purple looks amazing and fits so perfectly with that cute pic. This is such gorgeous, creative design.
Juicy by Jina is a stunning dimensional page - love the layers and shapes she’s created.
The next one is Hello My Dear Friend, by sokee. It’s so soft and spring-inspired, but kinda bright and a lot of fun at the same time. Love it!
And I said there was color. This one from Laura is color-tastic and generally fabulous Which is what it’s called, so me & Laura obviously agree on that!
And last but not least, Butterfly by ValeJules. The colors and brushwork are amazing - what a great effect for incorporating the photo into the artwork!
I take photos, write, blog, and scrapbook. I also love dogs, natural light, good beer, Harry Potter, and the Oxford comma.

Sometimes journaling is hard. We may want to scrap a certain photo, or share a story, but the words might not come easily. Sometimes, you fall in love with a kit and don’t even have a photo that might work with it. Sometimes you want to make a page and not clutter it up with a bunch of words or a full story. And maybe, just maybe… you end up with a mental block and can’t even think of a direction to go with a page. Chances are, you have a ton of hidden material tucked inside just waiting to come out.
Lists are a great tool for those times when you just feel stuck or don’t know what to say. You don’t have to use a lot of words. You don’t have to tell a full story. You don’t even need a picture. And you can find the idea for lists just about anywhere and everywhere. You could even scrap your to-do lists or shopping lists.
Lists work if you are scrapping traditional pages, art journal pages or even Project Life pages. Total versatility.
I just purchased Listography Journal: Your Life in Lists by Lisa Nola.
It is a fun book that you can fill out, and it has a lot of great illustrations.
There is a whole series of these books: Music, Movies, Friends, Love, My Future, and Parenthood.
Moorea Seal generates a new list topic every Tuesday (in 2013). She includes a PDF that you can print, fill out and share by #52lists2013. These would be great to scrap/journal.
Here are a few other ideas:
- Playlists (from different periods of your life)
- Favorite teachers/mentors
- Closest relatives
- Friends & online buddies (along with the years you were friends)
- Exes (you can include your favorite/least favorite thing about them)
- Horrible and/or funny dates
- Clothing styles/fads you went through
- What is currently in your purse/bag
- Groups you belong (have belonged) to
- Volunteer activities past/present/future
- Typical chores throughout the week and who does what (and/or list favorite and least favorite chores)
- Interesting co-workers
- Strange requests you’ve received
- Your accomplishments
- Interesting classes you’ve taken
What would you list?

Today I’m highlighting a layout I spotted recently that I loved on sight. It’s one by our very own Kimberlee, from the OSD Creative Team, and…well, I think it speaks for itself. Or it should speak for itself, but I’m about to talk all about it anyway! Layout 1-2-3 is all about looking at a layout and working out why it is that you like it. For today’s Layout 1-2-3, I can tell you:
The ONE thing that completely stands out to me about this page is how strongly the black & white elements - especially the picture - stand out even in amongst all that bold, delicious color (the blue & yellow from Tina’s kit is killer too).
The TWO things I’m inspired to try from this page are: a right-aligned list-style journal block (which looks AMAZING!) and putting a bold piece of word art right in the middle like that. Gorgeous.
And the THREE things that I just generally love about this page? First, the perfectly-eclectic, just-grungy-enough style. It is so bold, and yet comes together effortlessly. Second, the fact that it uses the WHOLE page basically, yet still has lots of visual ‘space’. And third, that those antlers look so totally awesome, and for some reason completely normal too, on this page!
I take photos, write, blog, and scrapbook. I also love dogs, natural light, good beer, Harry Potter, and the Oxford comma.

I couldn’t settle on an inspirational quote for this week at first, but in doing so I ended up looking at some of my favourite passages from author Neil Gaiman’s books. I was tempted to post one of those, but then I found this. It might be more of a new year thing, but hey, it’s the first of the month. Wishing you all some magic & good madness this week, and in the spirit of April Fools’ Day, here’s to surprises.

Sometimes, I get the feeling that when people hear the term “art journal(ing),” they automatically feel that it is supposed to be pages filled with a lot of emotion, angst, deep thoughts, etc. Sometimes, I think that scares people away from the whole idea of art journaling, and that is really too bad.
Really an art journal is just a visual journal… a representation of whatever you want to share visually. So it doesn’t have to be something serious, something deep, or something super meaningful or private. You can just play around with colors, fun elements, doodles, your sense of humor, or whatever you are feeling the need to record.
Here are a couple of examples of journal pages that might inspire you to think about art journaling a little differently.

So there are some great examples of pages that don’t necessarily have some deep save-the-world meaning, but they were a creative expression of the moment. Whatever the mood, you can always create something… happy moodling… bored moodling… excited moodling… the sky-is-the-limit moodling.
Take a chance and just have some fun.

I think a lot of digital scrapbookers would agree that this hobby of ours is THE craft - it’s not messy, it’s fun, it’s easy, and the results are pretty awesome. But that’s not gonna stop us from lookin’ elsewhere from time to time, of course. I stumbled upon CHA’s new Cre8time website today, and I gotta say, I love the concept. So often, a creative pursuit becomes a luxury, something that Cre8time points out makes us a feel a little selfish about doing and enjoying. The idea behind Cre8time is to ‘reclaim your creativity’ by spending 8 hours a month creating things that make you happy. What a simple and lovely idea. And bonus: their site is a great source of arts & crafts inspiration , and they have a great variety of projects in their Cre8tions gallery. I immediately spotted this cute project from Carmen:

Kari here with our first ever Words of the Week….a little quote to live by.
“Don’t try to smile for others sake. In all honesty, it’s just as good as lying. Honesty with yourself is the only thing that will bring you any happiness ever. Let your emotions out. Empty yourself of all things that you need to. Then, and only then will you be able to find peace (after all the other things cluttering it are gone). Cry a river. Think a mountain. Let your soul go from heaven to hell and back. Do all things and want nothing. Then and only then will you have everything. “

Sometimes you see stuff on the internet so ridiculously cute that you have to share it with someone. This is one such thing. Have you ever looked at a baby and thought ‘that look needs a bit more vintage pilot’? No? Well, neither had I, but now that I’ve seen what it looks like, I might just think that in future. Taking the sleep-time outfit to new heights, I give you Pilot Baby!
