Have you ever heard of a Mixed Paper Journal before? Thin of them as a hybrid scrapbook of sorts. Found Paper Co. describes them as, “…somewhere in between a plain photo album and an all out scrapbook.” I think I agree with that….yes, yes I do. The casual, freestyle flow of these journals reminds me a lot of Ali Edwards, A Week in the Life project. That “ANYTHING GOES” style is a-ok with me! (Less “rules” for me to goof up…)

To put one together, you can go countless directions with it… but there are some basic supplies you’ll want to have.

  • Assorted Papers | Found Paper Co. has a fun tutorial on how she put her album together using mementos from a trip to New York City. You could also just use assorted papers from your stash.
  • Photos | Print some out in color as well as black and white to add more of that random feel
  • Journaling | write all those little notes down on paper scraps or type and print out
  • Misc. Supplies | alphabet stickers, adhesive, labels, tags, binder rings, hole punch, or a blank journal, etc.

Like I mentioned, this project can go 100 different ways… one option is to collect all the bits you want to include in your journal, then hole punch your items and assemble using binder rings or ribbon, like the journal below.

Another option is to keep it rolling like an ongoing creative project that you’ll keep adding to. Dispatch From LA did just that in her Travel Journal where she used a blank journal as the base…

SO FUN! I’m especially swooning over the idea of journaling and labeling right ON some of the photos… makes me feel naughty!

Although these examples uses traditional supplies, you could easily throw this together digitally, then just print it out and assemble!

Try it, I think you’ll like it!

That looks really fun, I wish I had that much of an imagination to do that with my photos.
