Next week, there will be a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence - the date will be 12.12.12. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but it is kind of cool when you stop to think that it will be 100 years before it happens again. I’m all for creating new family traditions and/or mini celebrations to make new memories or share special moments together. That’s why I think that next week is a great opportunity.

Maybe we’ll have a special dinner, or I’ll buy someone a dozen flowers, or give them 12 kisses. Maybe we’ll take 12 pictures to document random things throughout the day. Or have each family member list their top 12 memories of 2012. Maybe it will be creating a mini time capsule or other simple keepsake. Maybe something as simple as creating a journal page with a focus on the date. Maybe a “right now” blog post with some Instagram photos. Maybe emailing or calling 12 friends and/or family members to say hello. Have an impromptu party with a couple of friends or neighbors. There are a so many different ways to document the day or making it special.

Another way is to participate in the One Day On Earth video project. This is their third year. People from all over the world are encouraged to sign up and document some part of their day. Wouldn’t you love to take part? You don’t have to be a professional videographer. Everyone is welcome.

Here is a blurb from their website:

“On December 12th, 12.12.12, across the planet, documentary filmmakers, students, and other inspired citizens will record the human experience over a 24-hour period and contribute their voice to the third annual global day of media creation called One Day on Earth. Together, we will create a shared archive and a film.

Founded in 2008, One Day on Earth’s first media creation event occurred on 10.10.10. and the second on 11.11.11. The 10.10.10 collaboration was the first ever simultaneous filming event occurring in every country of the world. One Day on Earth collaborations create a unique geo-tagged video archive as well as an annual feature film.

Together, we are showcasing the amazing diversity, conflict, tragedy, and triumph that occurs in one day. We invite you to join our international community of thousands of filmmakers, hundreds of schools, and dozens of non-profits, and contribute to this unique global mosaic. One Day on Earth is a community that not only watches, but participates.”

Watching the video is a powerful experience. Here is a link to the trailer for the 10.10.10 video. The movie will be available 12.12.12 on iTunes. Maybe you can spend part of your day watching it and sharing the global community with your friends/family?
